Sozanski's article was a little too acid for my live-and-let-live artistic outlook. I'd love for somebody to take up the sword in defense of my own personal achievements, but I've been around for long enough to know it probably won't happen unless I've made some serious money already, in which case I won't need a personal ninja.
Maybe Sozanski is really complaining that Philadelphia is nurturing its own Damien Hirsts. It's irritating when someone pays someone else a lot of money to produce stuff that drives everybody crazy. But we've been putting up with that forever. In fact, I still feel like I only concurred with it a few weeks ago and am a little in shock. I have to admit my reluctance and disbelief was in regard to narrative's ever having gone away - how could it be that it is returning? My own angle on this is still questioing how the return to narrative may also be linked to a return to romanticism - which for me stands to reason by comparison, does that mean we've just lived though a relatively CLASSICAL period? Oish - Don't ask me about that yet - - - no one gave me the memo....KJTKaren Joan Toppinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07041107989905672096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15193463.post-44736309804626820282008-06-23T22:45:00.000-04:002008-06-23T22:45:00.000-04:00Let me not try to improve on Parrish's well-writte...Let me not try to improve on Parrish's well-written comments except to agree and to bemoan how frustrating it is as an artist who dreams slightly differently than these folks seem to. It has always bothered me, and this is brought up by our recent NYC trip, that once artists hit the big time everything they make becomes spectacle. It is probably worth arguing that they were going in that direction in the first place, but I tend to have this aversion to work that's large, impressively red, and screams "Look at me!" as if the rest of the world were not already paying notice (you've got a huge show at the MOMA - I get it, I see you...). In any case, I usually find these trips disheartening because I struggle to find my own place in an art world already saturated with artists - is it possible to be noticed without making that colossal splash? Would I suddenly be interested in making enormous exhibits if given the labor and money? I think not, and hope that I'm not alone in my thinking, and not doomed to die in obscurity in the meantime...Melissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17791383094250193652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15193463.post-51949493960595032512008-06-23T22:28:00.000-04:002008-06-23T22:28:00.000-04:00Amen, my brother!Amen, my brother!Melissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17791383094250193652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15193463.post-26271693727253151332007-12-02T18:50:00.000-05:002007-12-02T18:50:00.000-05:00Exhibitions like Murakami's and Eliasson's strike ...Exhibitions like Murakami's and Eliasson's strike at the core of the disparity between artists with seemingly infinite resources and artists with none.

Don't get me wrong, I love their work as well. But both artists function more like large-scale project managers and entrepreneurs than studio artists. Which isn't necessarily a problem unless you're a small scale artist like Laylah Ali.

The October issue of Artforum (as I'm sure you're aware of) dedicates the entire written section to "Art as Production" and some of these issues are brought up.

Is there room for a single painting in a Murakami/Eliasson run art world? And if not, is that a problem? Eliasson and Murakami's production makes spending weeks on a still image seem like an archaic, impractical endeavor.Matt Parrishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03755987054458695744noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15193463.post-64421606824825947322007-01-24T11:30:00.000-05:002007-01-24T11:30:00.000-05:00in response to your response to a blog by James R:...in response to your response to a blog by James R:

Henry Fool is among my favorites!
